Speeding Offences

FAQs

What is the penalty for speeding?

The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and 3 penalty points added to your licence.  Accumulating 12 or more penalty points within a 3-year period could lead to you being disqualified from driving.

What happens if I am caught by a speed camera?

Within 14 days of your car being caught speeding, you will receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) and a Section 172 notice.

Upon receiving the Section 172 notice, you must return it within 28 days, telling the police who was driving the car.  You must return the notice, as ignoring it might result in a court summons.

After returning the notice, you'll either receive a Fixed Penalty Notice or a letter requiring you to go to court.

What if the police stop me for speeding?

If the police stop you for speeding, they may either give you a verbal warning, issue or send you a Fixed Penalty Notice.  or order you to go to court, with a letter detailing further instructions.

How do I deal with a Fixed Penalty Notice?

If you receive a Fixed Penalty Notice, you will need to plead guilty or not guilty.

If you choose to plead guilty, you will face a £100 fine and 3 points on your licence, unless offered an option to attend a speed awareness course.  If you choose to attend a speed awareness course, you won't be allowed to go on another one for 3 years.

If you plead not guilty, we can help you prepare your case and represent you at court.  However, if you are found guilty at court, you may face a higher fine, additional penalty points or lose your licence.

Does it make a difference if I am a new driver?

If you are caught speeding within 2 years of passing your driving test, you risk having your licence revoked if you accumulate 6 or more penalty points.
